So, what’s it really like?

Writer: MadHawkMadHawk

I remember the first time sitting for power when I felt like I was linking up to the beyond. I had heard my tutors talking about what might happen, but I was still struggling with trying to see images…I still can’t.

There’s a kind of sensory disorder called APHANTASIA, where no matter how you try, you just can’t bring forward those images in your mind. You close your eyes, you relax and do your breathing, and then you are asked to see an apple, change the color of the apple, change the size etc. I was always very frustrated with this kind of mental exercise because while I can “know” what an apple looks like, I have a perception of it—I can smell it, I can taste it, and often I can feel it all by just thinking about an apple—but I still can’t “see” it. This is why I stopped doing most guided meditations. It was so frustrating, and it was only making me angry.

Sitting for power is NOT like that, not at all.

The person leading the meditation may start with imagery but as one of my tutors Philip Dykes says , that’s mainly to give your brain something to do, something to work on and keep it busy while your higher self goes to work. This is about you putting everything aside, including your expectations, your worries, your grocery lists….all of it. My other tutor, Kerry McCleod asks that you put all of that into a box, tie it up with a pretty ribbon, and set it mentally in another room for you to get back to later. Sitting for power is all about you in your highest form sitting in the presence of spirit. This can be energy you imagine to be the realm of angels, the creator, source, or maybe your guide team. It doesnt matter, just as long as you understand this is something outside of you connecting with the inside part of you, whatever names you give them.

Physical Medium Scott Milligan, who goes into a deeper trance teaches that the part of you that fills with energy is your soul center. He asks his class, “where do you think the soul resides within you?” And as expected, a whole range of answers from all of us; the heart, the brain, your third eye. He always smiles and says, close, but not exactly. He then tells us to think about puppies or our babies, and that sense of deep love and affection—the gooey middle part of you where the butterflies sometimes are—that’s where you soul is. More precisely, your solar plexus.

Once you’ve found that sweet spot where your soul resides within you, he asks you to imagine that energy, and use that for readings, and for sitting in the power. Try feeling for your own spot now. In me it feels very warm and fluttery, and I can know more than see the vibrant bright light within. Can you feel it yet? Keep trying, because this is where you’ll focus when you sit for power on your own.

Using the guided sitting for power from Philip Dykes, during class, I felt what it was to truly let go and simply be. I didn’t worry about images, what I wasn’t seeing that everyone else was, and simply focused on absolutely NOTHING. It’s something that takes practice, so if you don’t get it right away keep trying.

Once I linked up, I began to feel a peculiar sense of floating. I was no longer sitting at my desk, I was elsewhere, in the presence of incredible energy. I’m still not able to see anything but I know. The sense of just knowing all that was happening without seeing anything is hard to describe. I know I was with my guides. I know they were all giving me their version of an embrace, welcoming me. I know they were all vaguely familiar and strange at the same time. I felt such incredible joy, love and peace. I wanted to stay there forever. Gently the link was broken and I was back in my chair at my desk feeling refreshed, and longing to do it again.

Each time I sat, experiences began to change depending on the kind of trance state I was trying to do. Sitting for power you should still have some awareness of the world you are still part of, like one foot in each place. You can also learn to hold that connection and use it to do mediumship readings.

Sitting for trance is a step beyond this. You actually work towards allowing yourself to detach, often times becoming a channel with automatic writing, automatic drawing (portraiture especially) or even physical mediumship where spirit uses your physical body. There are not that many physical mediums, the skill is rare. If you are interested in trance mediumship at all, Scott Milligan is the tutor you need. He teaches all these things.

When I first began sitting in trance with Scott, I began to feel very peculiar sensations. I had a snug band around my forehead, tightening gently at the temples. A spot between my eyebrows had a slight pulse, and I was freezing cold. As I went on through his class, I began to experience facial pressure, as if my face was being shaped into someone else. All this sounds very alarming… and I was scared at first. This is the spirit world reaching out and touching you. This is the work tuning in your gifts of various clairs. All very exciting and totally normal.

One session was on Brandon’s birthday. I was very emotional, and it was hard to set that aside. I worked on leaning in to spirit beyond my grief, and I could FEEL Brandon was there! I could scarcely breathe for fear of breaking that precious connection. Scott called us back, but as he did so I felt warmth and a gentle kiss on my forehead. Even more astonishing, Scott ended the class by channeling his spirit friend Eric—he called on me. Spirit asked to speak to me about my son. Scott didn’t know the circumstances of my loss, that it was Brandon’s birthday or anything. Eric spoke beautiful words to me about Brandon as a soul, and a few other things I keep private. It was the very best birthday present, confirmation that we do not die. We close our eyes in this world and open them in the next.

Connecting to spirit is an honor and a privilege. It’s new to me but at the same time, ancient within me. All of us have this ability as children. As we grow and change, I think most of us let go of that link to become part of our physical world. If we dwell in the heavens with spirit all the time, it’s very likely we’d be too distracted to work on all the things we came to earth to do! Walking in both worlds is a skill that can be grown, honed, and strengthened. The very best way to do this is to sit for power. I hope you try. I’ll put the links below again, from my last entry.

Much love,
